In this film, which landed right in the middle of the 80s, John Hughes, who became the voice of the white middle-class youth of the decade, took the blue-eyed rising stars of the real supergroup of the era under his arm. Landing the cast on the screen feels a lot like watching the "Traveling Wilburys" music video: "There comes Molly Ringwald, there comes Bob Dylan, now Anthony Michael Hall, then Tom Petty, then Emilio Estevez and ... now Roy Orbison!" "The Breakfast Club" follows the Saturdays of five high school students , who must must bear the penalty. Each of them represents a different social group—the rebel, the prom queen, the jock, the freak, and the nerd. Surprise, surprise: at the end of the day, they all discover that they are not as different as they first seemed and realize that people are more than their social roles. The scene promoting the rape culture, considered problematic today, comes free with the ticket money, as is the custom with all 80s youth films. The cult "Breakfast Club" is our opening film for September 80s and lands perfectly on September 1st. A must-watch to understand the decade's attitude to lifestyle, class society, and Generation X's journey to adulthood during the height of the American Empire.
