Genre
A former mayor of Naples names his newborn baby girl after the siren that was turned into the magnificent city. The divine Parthenope (played by actress and model Celeste Dalla Porta in her youth and Stefania Sandrelli in her mature years) is destined to embody the irresistible, maddening, vital and passionate charm of youth. She is almost like a mirage, a memory of the joys and tragedies she once experienced. Parthenope is a living reflection of the irretrievable past of the city whose graceful silhouette and indescribable beauty are most evident from the luxurious villa on the island of Capri.
Paolo Sorrentino (The Great Beauty, Youth) collaborates with the Yves Saint Laurent fashion house to create this very stylish and glossy spectacle. Both, the camera and the characters (Gary Oldman, Silvio Orlando in excellent roles), simply cannot take their eyes off Parthenope. The world is looking at her, and she is exploring the world, having chosen the path of an anthropologist. As Sorrentino follows Parthenope's life over several decades in this surreal and touchingly sentimental dream, audiences may recognize motifs from the director's previous films.
