A carefree wanderer

Cyclists Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper) embark on a journey across America, from Los Angeles to New Orleans. On the way, they encounter American life in all its colors, and it soon becomes clear that their desire for freedom has no place in the world of decent people. "The Carefree Wanderer" is completely Americana - the main characters are of course named after Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid - but also this one and a quintessential hippie movie that dared to say something that at the time no one even wanted to think: liberal USA is a fleeting dream and the hippie revolution is doomed. Only a month after the film premiere, the murders of Charles Manson took place, which turned this prophecy into a terrible reality. "The Carefree Wanderer" was one of the most game-changing films in Hollywood at the time. Its enormous success, $60 million at the box office against a budget of less than half a million, forced the film industry to start looking for new talent from the side of the counterculture, opening the gates for new creators to unheard of creative freedom already at the beginning of the next decade, when the so-called the group of movie brats, i.e. Spielberg, Coppola, Scorsese, De Palma, Milius and others.
