PÖFF: The Brothers Kitaura

Sigmund Freud would surely miss this dark and funny Japanese comedy about patricide. The final film of the "Critics' Choice" competition program "The Kitaurad Brothers" is, like our opening film, a black comedy about death. But in this case, it is not about killing yourself, but rather your father. 40-year-old Sota Kitaura lives with his father, whom he accidentally kills during an argument. Not knowing what to do, he calls on his younger brother Akira for help, and what ensues is utter chaos, with many references to Hitchcock's funniest film, The Trouble with Harry (1955). And if it wasn't for his dead father, Akira ends up killing Uncle Daisuke as well. We all know that according to Sigmund Freud, the death of the father is the birth of culture. This brilliant comedy - which goes even further because the uncle also dies - proves that doubles don't cut it.
