Ülo Pikkov (1976) is an internationally recognized filmmaker, producer and lecturer. Pikkov studied animation at the Turku Art Academy in the Republic of Finland and since 1996 has directed several award-winning animated films. He has written articles about movies and fiction books for both children and adults. 2005 he graduated from the Law Institute of the University of Tartu, specializing in media and copyright issues. Pikkov is the author of the book "Animasophy, theoretical writings about animation film" (2011). In 2018, he received his doctorate at the Estonian Academy of Arts with the thesis "Anti-animation: The peculiarity of Eastern European animation film", and today he works as a professor of animation film at the same institution. Pikkov is a member of the Estonian Cinema Association and the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Ülo Pikkov's film program will screen a total of 8 films on 19.09 at 19:00, the screening will be preceded by a conversation with the director Ülo Pikkov. The conversation is being recorded. 1. Sewing machine (17' / experimental film) 2024 "Sewing Machine" is a film about the town of Petseri and its people, told through the life story of my great-grandmother. My great-grandmother's father, who was the deputy mayor of Petser, was killed by the Bolsheviks because he had refused to give the keys to the monastery in the town to the revolutionaries. The armored trains of the Estonian War of Independence reach Petseri a few months later and the town is liberated. One of the soldiers of the armored train, a Danish volunteer, has a film camera with him, and he records the oldest film footage of Petser, and somewhere there is my great-grandmother on the film tape. 2. Reunion (14' / flat puppet film) 2021 The animated film "Reunion" was created from found objects from Ruhnu Island, and it tells the story of the tragic history of Ruhnu Island, where all the island's inhabitants left in 1944. from their home in the whirlwind of war, and when they had the opportunity to visit their home island again decades later, new people were already living there. In addition to the twists and turns of history, "Reunion" also examines the nature of home, is home more of a location or peace of mind? 3. Tortoise and Hare (9' / documentary) 2020 A story about a mother and son and a race with a turtle that you always lose. 4. The story of letting go (11' / experimental film) 2017 Our culture is based on stories, stories are the foundation of everything. Our life can also be seen as a story - a biography. But what happens when your story doesn't bear telling? Is it possible to let go of stories or give them up? Can you make a movie about a story when the narrator's only desire is to forget it? "The Story of Letting Go" is a documentary animated film about a young girl who wants to let go of the shadows of her past. 5. Empty space (10' puppet film) 2016 A ten-year-old girl wanted a puppy for her birthday. The disappointment was great, when instead the father, whose existence he had no idea, turned out to be a living gift... The animated documentary film "Empty Room" tells the story of a long-ago dream, which is now finally coming true through the film. 6. TIK-TAK (10' / puppet film) 2014 "Tik-tak", an animated film with documentary elements, deals with making sense of time and its fatal nature. Can a watchmaker who controls the movement of clocks also control the time? 7. Memory of the body (11' / puppet film) 2011 The body remembers more than we can imagine, the body also remembers the worries and pain of its predecessors. This is how all the stories of the world are hidden in every body. Our bodies carry the stories of our parents and grandparents, the stories of their predecessors and predecessors. But how deep can you go in your body's memories? The animated film "Body Memory" was created in 1949. in memory of the March deportation. 8. The End (6' experimental film) 2013 "The End" exhibits film tape as a material, the nature of different emulsion and paint layers, different framings and wear marks caused by the repeated presentation of a film copy. The base material of "The End" is scraps of film obtained from various cinemas and archives - records of the end of worn-out cinema films, which were never intended to be presented to the audience. Unlike a modern digital film copy, every play leaves at least a few scratches on a classic film copy. This is a film about time and its transience.
