Based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novel Crime and Punishment, the film is set in modern-day Kazakhstan. A philosophy student at Almaty University rents a room from a great-aunt on the edge of the city and suffers from loneliness and lack of money there. He is surrounded by an atmosphere of poverty and an ideology of total competition, where people are divided into poor and rich, strong and weak. Little by little, the idea of challenging himself and robbing the grocery store, where he has sometimes gone to buy bread, sprouts in his head.
