The Architect of Shadows - Fritz Lang retrospective - 05.12 to 22.01 | Director of "Metropolis" and "M". The Fritz Lang retrospective starts already on December 5! One of the most influential directors of the last century will be on the Artis cinema screens until the end of January. The retrospective is brought to you by Unlimited Media and Kultuurikapital. "House by the River" (House by the River, 1950) A gothic horror film in which a writer covers up the murder of his neighbor, leading him deeper into a world of guilt and paranoia. Lang's production mastery creates a tense atmosphere where every shadow and sound has meaning. House by the River (1950), directed by Fritz Lang, is a gothic noir film set in Victorian America. Stephen Byrne, a failed writer, lives with his wife, Marjorie, and their maid, Emily. One night, Stephen tries to attack Emily and accidentally strangles her to death. Stephen enlists the help of his brother John to dump Emily's body in the river. The police begin to investigate the incident, and at the same time, Stephen uses the murder to promote his creative career, even writing a novel based on crime. "The House by the River" is a visually striking film that combines noir and gothic aesthetics. Lang masterfully uses shadow play, claustrophobic interiors and river symbolism to create a sense of doom and psychological torment. The film focuses on guilt, repressed emotions and the destructive power of ambition. Stephen's amoral actions stand in stark contrast to John's dubious involvement and Marjorie's quiet suffering. Critics have highlighted the film's atmospheric mastery, with Edward J. Cronjager's cinematography and George Antheil's music creating a hauntingly oppressive tonality. Although initially underrated, the film has since been hailed as a dark and layered study of morality and the fragility of humanity.
